On April 10, the Yonhap News Agency learned that Lee Changyang, Minister of Trade, Industry and Resources of the Republic of Korea, met with Grant Shapps, Minister of Energy Security of the United Kingdom, at the Lotte Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul this morning. The two sides issued a joint declaration on strengthening exchanges and cooperation in the field of clean energy.
According to the declaration, South Korea and the UK agreed on the need to achieve a low-carbon transition from fossil fuels, and the two countries will strengthen cooperation in the field of nuclear power, including the possibility of South Korea’s participation in the construction of new nuclear power plants in the UK. The two officials also discussed ways to cooperate in various nuclear power fields, including the design, construction, disintegration, nuclear fuel and small modular reactor (SMR), and the manufacture of nuclear power equipment.
Lee said South Korea is competitive in the design, construction and equipment manufacturing of nuclear power plants, while Britain has advantages in disintegration and nuclear fuel, and the two countries can learn from each other and achieve complementary cooperation. The two countries agreed to accelerate discussions on Korea Electric Power Corporation s participation in the construction of a new nuclear power plant in the U.K. following the establishment of the British Nuclear Energy Authority (GBN) in the U.K. last month.
In April last year, the UK announced it would increase the proportion of nuclear power to 25 per cent and build up to eight new nuclear power units. As a major nuclear power country, Britain participated in the construction of the Gori Nuclear Power Plant in South Korea and has a long history of cooperation with South Korea. If Korea participates in the new nuclear power plant project in Britain, it is expected to further enhance its status as a nuclear power power.
In addition, according to the joint declaration, the two countries will also strengthen exchanges and cooperation in areas such as offshore wind power and hydrogen energy. The meeting also discussed energy security and plans to combat climate change.
