Green hydrogen: rapid expansion of global development pipelines and projects
A new report from Aurora energy research highlights how quickly companies are responding to this opportunity and developing new hydrogen production facilities. Using its global electrolyzer database, Aurora found that companies plan to deliver a total of 213.5gw electrolyzer projects by 2040, 85% of which are in Europe.
Except for the early projects in the conceptual planning stage, there are more than 9gw planned projects in Europe in Germany, 6Gw in the Netherlands and 4gw in the UK, all of which are planned to be put into operation by 2030. At present, the global electrolytic cell capacity is only 0.2gw, mainly in Europe, which means that if the planned project is delivered by 2040, the capacity will increase by 1000 times.
With the maturity of technology and supply chain, the scale of electrolyzer project is also expanding rapidly: so far, the scale of most projects is between 1-10MW. By 2025, a typical project will be 100-500mW, usually supplying “local clusters”, which means hydrogen will be consumed by local facilities. By 2030, with the emergence of large-scale hydrogen export projects, the scale of typical projects is expected to further expand to 1GW +, and these projects will be deployed in countries benefiting from cheap electricity.
Electrolyzer project developers are exploring a range of different business models based on the power sources they use and the end users of the hydrogen generated. Most of the projects with power supply will use wind energy, followed by solar energy, while few projects will use grid power. Most electrolyzers indicate that the end user will be industry, followed by transportation.
